What is Structured Cabling?

Structured cabling is the design and installation of wiring data centres, offices and apartment buildings for data or voice communications using Cat 5e, Cat 6, and fibre optic cabling and modular connectors.

How is it applied?

Structured cabling is applied various element arrangements, typically using a central patch panel from where each modular connection can be used as needed. Each outlet is then patched into a network switch for network use or into an IP or PBX (private branch exchange) telephone system patch panel.

Lines patched as data ports into a network switch require simple straight-through patch cables at each end to connect a computer. IP (internet protocol) phone systems can run the telephone and the computer on the same wires, eliminating the need for separate phone wiring. Cat 5e and Cat 6 can both effectively run power over Ethernet (PoE) applications - but Cat 5e cable sees more power dissipation. Performance and power efficiency are higher when Cat 6A cabling is used to power and connect to PoE devices.

Cable Types

  • Cat 5e is a twisted pair cable type designed for high signal integrity - often used in cabling for computer networks and is also used to carry basic voice services.

  • Cat 6 is used to carry Ethernet 10Base-T, 100Base-TX, and 1000Base-T (Gigabit Ethernet) connections. Cat 6 cable has more stringent specifications for crosstalk and system noise than previous cabling standards.

  • Cat 6a is the latest standard for enhanced performance standards for twisted pair cable systems. Category 6a performs at improved specifications, in particular in the area of alien crosstalk compared to Cat 6 UTP (unshielded twisted pair), which exhibits high alien noise in high frequencies.

  • Multi-Mode Fiber for premise applications where links are less than 1000 meters for 100 MB/s or less, 550 meters for data rates of 1 GB/s or less, and 300 meters for data rates of 10GB/s or less. There are two types of multi-mode fiber, 62.5 um and 50 um.

  • Single-Mode Fiber for bandwidth requirements exceeding multi-mode’s capability, distances exceeding multi-mode’s capability and where the application dictates single mode like video.
